Afghanistan has no strategic value for the United States

Matthew Hoh, a former Marine captain who recently resigned from his post as Senior Civilian Representative in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, talked today on NPR about how misguided and strategically useless the Afghan occupation is.

In his resignation letter, Hoh writes: "the September 11th attacks, as well as the Madrid and London bombings, were primarily planned and organized in Western Europe; a point that highlights the threat is not one tied to traditional geographic or political boundaries."

What this means is that 'Al Qaeda', if it even ever existed, has transformed itself over the years and does not need 'haven' in any country. It is an ideology, not an elaborate organization. Therefore, it cannot be fought with tanks and helicopters, and cannot be controlled by occupying any country.

"[...] I don't believe we should continue losing and sacrificing our young men and women for goals that meet no strategic purpose to the United States," said Hoh.

New Theory on the Origin of Life

I came across an exciting new theory on the origins of life. Scientists think life started in oceanic alkaline hydrothermal vents, in which amino acids started to form and began self-assembling into RNA and DNA molecules, and powered by a process called chemiosmosis, in which a proton-powered enzyme makes ATP.

This means that we are potentially very close to be able to observe the creation of new life, and possibly even, to artificially create new life. I predict we will, eventually, create artificial life, and we will see that there is no divine intervention needed. We will see that there is no soul. There is only chemistry and physics.

The CIA reads this blog.

You can now all feel safe! The CIA is actively monitoring blogs and social media on the Internet. They even bought a stake in a software company that specializes in data mining of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and who knows what else.

Big Brother is watching you!

Hey CIA, do you have a job for me? I would make a kick-ass operative.

Animal souls

If you believe that humans have souls because they have thoughts and feelings, then you also have to believe that animals have souls, because animals DO have thoughts and feelings.

A little etymological lesson is in order. The Latin word for soul is anima, which means "that which animates", and from which we have the word animalia "that which is animated", which in modern english translates as "animal". So we humans ARE animals too, because we are indeed "animated".

So whether you believe that "that which animates" is simply the biochemical process we know as life or an esoteric, sprititual force of some kind, my point is if you believe that humans have souls, you also have to believe that animals - and every other living thing - have souls as well. Ask yourselves what the implications are for your faith. Are humans "special" among all the species? If we nuke ourselves out of existence in a third world war, and rats survive and prevail, then maybe we humans are the dumb ones, and rats are superior.

To believe in souls is one thing, but to believe that only humans have souls is very anthropocentric, and I'm sorry to say this, but, the Universe isn't as anthropocentric as you may feel.

I predict that rats will survive and continue to evolve long after we humans have gone the way of the dodo, that is to say, gone extinct.

Tax the Churches

What would you say if you heard that some people don't pay their fair share of taxes while you do? What would you say if these people were much wealthier than you, and you paid more taxes than them? You would think this is unfair.

Well, some churches don't pay any taxes, passing the burden on to YOU to pay for useless foreign wars, among other wasteful government expenditures. You should be pissed.

Giving a tax break to a religious organization, is a GOVERNMENT ENDORSEMENT OF AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION, which violates the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Countless phony churches exist in the US, simply as tax shelters for rich individuals. Tax evasion is a FELONY. Demand that churches be taxed!

"Consider that for every tax dollar a religious organization does not pay, you and I pay it on its behalf. Many are among the wealthiest organizations in the world: by 1971, the amount of real and personal property owned by U.S. churches was approx. $110 billion. In New York City alone, the amount was $3 billion in 1989. A 1986 estimate showed religious income in that year of approx. $100 billion, or about five times the income of the five largest corporations in the U.S. All tax free. "-

Canada's gun registry being challenged

Apparently, there is growing opposition to the failed Canadian 'long-gun registry'. It's expensive, and has not helped solve any crimes since its inception. It is a waste of tax dollars, and infringes on the basic human right of self-defense. Read a commentary by Greg Thompson on the topic:

Further, there is a growing desire among Canadians to legalize concealed carry of firearms. If you are a Canadian resident and would like to see this basic human right legalized, visit this site:

And finally, a lawyer explains that the Right to Keep and Bear Arms in Canada is authorized by a very ancient legal document: The English Bill of Rights of 1689. Current firearm restrictions in Canadian Law are unlawful. Read about it:

I have a question for Christians

I have an honest question for Christians. Do you believe that there is only one God?

Then why do the Ten Commandments say:

"Do not have any other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,

" - Exodus, 20

Why are those commandments at the top of the list if there is only one God? If there truly was only one God, wouldn't the Commandment simply say "You must believe in me"? Why is the God of the Bible so "jealous" of other gods if they don't exist? Does he have competitors?

Further, the Bible mentions MANY other gods by name. Take a look at this list, compiled by Norbert Sykes:

The Gods of The Bible

By Norbert Sykes
Let's look at some of the Gods mentioned in the Bible:
Anammelech II Kings 17:31 Sepharvite God.
Ashima II Kings 17:30 Samaritan Moon Goddess.
Ashtoreth I Kings 11:05 Canaanite Goddess.
Baal I Kings 18:19 Canaanite God ("Lord") of
fertility, vegitation, and storms.
Baal-berith Judges 8:33 A regional variation/aspect of Baal.
Baal-peor Numbers 25:03 Moabite regional variation/aspect of
Baal-zebub Luke 11:19 Philistine/Ekronian regional
variation/aspect of Baal.
Baalim I Kings 18:18 Canaanite Gods ("Lords"), a
collective of the different
aspects of Baa.
Bel Isiah 46:01 Assyrian/Babylonian/Sumerian God
Chemosh I Kings 11:07 Moabite war God.
Dagon I Samuel 05:02 Philistine/Ekronian/Babylonian God
of agriculture.
Diana of the
Ephesians Acts 19:35 Ephesian moon and nature Goddess,
Jehovah Exodus 6:03 Hebrew God
Jupiter Acts 14:12 Roman God (possibly derived from
'Zeus-pater', Father Zeus).
Lucifer Isiah 14:12 ("Light-Bearer")
Mercurius Acts 14:12 Otherwise known as the Roman God
Mercury, God of communication and
travel, and messenger of the
Gods...which is probably why Paul
was called this at Lystra.
Milcom I Kings 11:05 Ammonite God
Molech I Kings 11:07 Ammonite God, also called Moloch,
most probably Baal-Hammon of
Nebo Isiah 46:01 Assyrian/Babylonian/Chaldean God of
wisdom and writing, also called
Nergal II Kings 17:30 Cuth/Assyrian/Babylonian war and
underworld God, also called
Nibhaz II Kings 17:31 Avites God
Nisroch II Kings 19:37 Assyrian God
Rimmon II Kings 05:18 Babylonian/Syrian storm God
involved (as Ramman) with the
Deluge, according to Hebrew texts;
also known as Ramman/Rammon.
Succoth-benoth II Kings 17:30 Babylonian fertility Goddess ("She
Who Produces Seed"), also known as
Tammuz Ezekial 8:14 Assyrian/Babylonian God
Tartak II Kings 17:31 Avites God

Please note that I'm not referring to any Deities not mentioned by name (for instance, the golden calf is not here). only alluded to, or ones I was just too tired to look up. };) I believe this gives us enough to work with. As you can see, it cleanly refutes your argument that Jehovah/Yahweh was the only God. That it does so in the 'supposed' word of God is a bonus.
- Norbert Sykes

So, again the question, why are all these Gods mentionned if they don't exist?

Nobel Prize

It's just funny to me that a guy who just won the Nobel PEACE Prize is planning to send more troops to Afghanistan.

I am of the opinion that Al Qaeda is an exaggerated threat, and that the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq would be more efficiently resolved by the use of CIA black ops rather than by the deployment of troops.

What can the Taliban do to us? They are landlocked, don't have a navy, don't have an air force. Sounds like a job for Jason Bourne, not Patton.

Kenya takes a stand against the right to self-defense

Kenya is about to ban the possession of semi-automatic rifles by private citizens. By banning possession, they actually mean hanging gun owners, of course. The Attorney General has not yet acted on the recommendation, suggesting he would prefer life imprisonment instead.

The goal is to reduce crime by assuming that all gun owners are criminals. This approach is misguided.

The Domestication of Zebras

I found a really good article on a proposed approach to domestication of wild species of animals. Attempts to domesticate zebras have failed, but some scientists think they found a way, which would involve selecting the animals based on the presence of a gene responsible for tameness.

Australia getting tough on fake crime!

The government of Australia now passed a law that will regulate replica firearms the same way as real firearms.

What does this mean for the average fake criminal? The fake criminal will have a harder time acquiring fake weapons to commit fake crime.

I am glad this will make fake Australia safer.

A theory of conciousness

Interesting article discussing the nature of consciousness. The theory presented here is that consciousness arises spontaneously from complexity. No magic, no soul. Complexity of an information system IS consciousness. Food for thought.

This fancy theory is called IIT (Integrated Information Theory [of Consciousness])
